Porn of Yore

So, I had occasion to check in with Pure Taboo this week and screen some of their latest offerings. This porn producer is on the forefront of releasing ‘episodes’ (as they call them), short hot films that their subscribers tune in to watch and enjoy. It’s the porn-watching model that seems to work best for us all in the current cultural marketplace and one that most porn companies had to come to seeing as too much DVD-produced film fare was being pirated and put up online, and became a format nobody was much watching anymore. Kind of an ‘if you can’t beat’um join um’ paradigm that seems to be serving companies like Pure Taboo and even Clips4Sale, well. (Arguably, Clips has a wide range of stuff, lots of it-and when I say lots I mean, lots and lots-of amateur quality, but this grainy, sloppily-produced fare is exactly what some viewers want).
Peaking in to the newer Pure Taboo films like “Momma’s Boy,” and “The Grandparents: (go to https://www.puretaboo.com/en) purely for research purposes of course, I found, as I always do watching porn, though hot stuff to be sure, there is nothing new under the sun. Which is perfectly fine, actually. When we watch this stuff we’re generally not looking to be surprised by some wholly new way for people to interact, we want the usual tropes, what we have come to expect or are anticipating from a film’s title. And that we are now getting it so easily, at home and in snippets of time, is great (and to be sure, the Pure Taboo folks are delivering!) But I did get to thinking of the porn or yore, or more precisely, the business of the porn of yore as I worked hard at my job viewing this films.
As I have said on more than one occasion, Chris (my partner in crime here, great buddy and smut scribe to the stars) and I met at a YNOT convention in 2009. This was a gathering of content creators, web masters, money men, CEO’s of websites in the adult business and this marked my feet first entry into the field (I had been writing plenty of years before that and managing some headway in mainstream and adult). What I also learned at YNOT was that the change in porn had already taken place, due to the advent (some would say intrusion) of digital and that all the DVD screeners I’d eventually get to review, the many starlets I’d meet, the relationships I’d come to build at some companies would be nothing much within a couple of years’ time.
Sure, I was sad to see things go this way. I enjoyed cultivating access to stars through publicists, being offered food and drink (a bagel and a coke most times); feeling like a big shot scouring comps to conventions. But one can’t halt progress, even if one can imagine lots (lots and lots) of questions and cautions about it. Given my druthers, I’d be working hard right now on putting all the music I create out on individual albums (remember those?) but all I can hope for now is to download my songs onto some brittle and hastily-created website (yeah yeah, I’ll send you the link when I do).
The porn of yore, or at least the manner in which we watched it, ain’t coming back. So we march forward for our gagging blow jobs and D.P.’s. while remembering better times.
